Cakes and Classes

Cakes and Classes make me smile! I fell into cake decorating by chance really. I had no interest in cooking at all and while I was bought up by a mother who was a excellent baker had no interest in that either. Then my husband thought it would be a good idea to buy my a cupcake class for a birthday gift, to my surprise I loved it and my cake journey began.

I love to learn and that is a fact! I went back to University in my late 30's and got my degree on my 40th birthday. I loved university but sadly never went on to use my degree. I was super proud and so my life time of learning carried on. In my quest to be a better cake decorator I signed up to do an evening class at a local school. My first night I was so out of my depth and thought I had zero natural ability in this skill at all. I was ready to run, but as I had paid up front I thought I had to stick it out. I was so glad I did because with good teachers and maybe a little of that natural talent I got better.

I have always used my love of the Internet and my computer so seek out the best teacher and either learn by just watching , or to be lucky enough to attend classes. Don't get me wrong it is not a cheap thing to do but I really love to learn from super talented people.

I have done Royal Icing twice with the wonderful and talented David Macarfrae and Ed, truly super and I love to see them both and learn such a lot. You can see Davids work here  http://davidcakesmasterclasses.co.uk/
Last time was also with the great Karen Davies and Alice Davies, it was a busy weekend but I came away feeling like I was on top of the world.  Found out more at  http://www.karendaviescakes.co.uk/

I love to model and one of the masters is the outstanding Carlos Lischetti . I had the honour of doing a course with him this year. He was such a kind man and even if time was short it was wonderful and I made a fab model.   http://carloslischetti.blogspot.co.uk/
This is the model I made with Carlos

Last and by no means least I have done several classes with a company very close to were I live.
Clairella Cakes is truly a fantastic place to learn. Claire is a kind and caring teacher who does everything to make you feel relaxed and ready to create a master piece. I always come home feeling I have learnt so so much and can add those skills to my list. She herself is a artist in every sense of the word and her cakes are some of the most beautiful I have seen. I think I can be bold as to say I can count her as a friend now, a common bond over cake lol. Plus if you ever do a course ( what are you waiting for book now!) she makes the best lunch ever! People come from all over the country and world to attend her classes, and I am the lucky one who lives near!

So Cakes and Classes are my smile for this weekend. I am glad I got to sit and write this as I have been really unwell with a nasty cold so it was relaxing to take my mind of it for once. I thought I would finish by sharing a few of my cakes. Ending with my new one which I made with clairella Cakes and one I am most proud of.

  1. Wow, these are amazing! The bird cake is gorgeous, and the last one is just beautiful.

I always feel my problem with cake decorating would be not eating all the icing before I could get it on the cake ;) #shareasmile

  4. Jill these are amazing, I would love the time to do something like this, to create and make and make someone happy to receive one. I do amateur ones for friends birthdays but they are nothing on this. I love the fairground one, but they are all amazing
